#MannersMonday - Never Speak Ill of Someone

Gentleman Tip #1: Never Speak Ill of Someone

A gentleman never speaks unfavorably towards another individual, especially if the other individual is not present. If a gentleman happens to find himself in a conversation where other parties have unkind words to say, it is the duty of the gentleman to excuse himself or preferably deflect the topic of the conversation to something more appropriate. Not only is this topic of conversation not polite, but it reflects poorly on your character, even if just by association. The same fashion you address someone to their face should mirror the manner you speak of them to their back. Our first Gentleman Tip is rather elementary, we should have all learned this at a very young age but to much surprise, many have either forgotten this or just choose not to care. Clearly, common courtesy isn’t so common.

This simple tip goes a long way.  Practicing the little things like this make a big difference and not only speaks volumes to the type of person you are perceived as but to whom you will become. After you do these habitually, it becomes second nature and you won’t have to consciously think to do them. When in doubt, stop and compare yourself to the “nicest guy” you know and ask if would be doing whatever you are doing at the time. Although it may seem weird, this serves as a visual tool to model your moral/mannerly compass after.

Check back next Monday for our weekly installment of #MannersMonday where we will tell you all about our second Gentleman Tip. Cheers Gents!
